Does it matter if the dog is barking at people out of a more fear based place then a guarding place? How can you tell the difference? I believe mine is fear, but it is hard to say. (10 month old puppy)

I think the mainstay of behavioural papers acknowledge both positive and negative reinforcement. How could they not? They are both real. The problem is confirmation bias, in my opinion. That is, if you want to support a particular side of a ‘debate’ you can probably find one or two papers that appear, in a limited way, to support your beliefs (or rather, in this case, the ethical desire that training needs to be force free). I say ‘limited’, because if you read the papers, their realm of applicability is always heavily peculiar to a set of conditions. That is necessary when conducting these studies - the idea then is to decide how this restricted applicability can then be generalised. This is why ‘behavioural science’ is a bit of a misnomer. The study can be conducted in a scientific way (though it generally is not - I’ll explain shortly), statistical methods can be applied, but the conclusions are necessarily conjecture. (I say the studies are not generally conducted in a scientific way, by which I am referring to the scientific method, because I come from a physics background. What is the method? Hypothesise, construct an experiment that either proves or disproves this single hypothesis - the hard part, very much subject to peer review - conduct it, you were either wrong or right. A good test lends itself well to confidence interval testing or better still discrete positive/negative outcomes. Behavioural papers often do not test hypotheses, often do not use quantitative, but use other methods, such as categorical, or worse, qualitative testing. Finally, the ‘tests’ are not subject to quite the same level of peer review as the pure sciences. They generally are based on actual data though - that is, data relating to actual dogs and their behaviour are included in such studies. There are no known better ways than a well thought out study to determine the answer to these sorts of questions. Anecdotal evidence via social media, for example, has its own biases and the videos we are exposed to are there because they satisfy an appetite - another kind of confirmation bias. So we need to be careful, right?)

I have a jack Russell. I cannot imagine trying to handle a 40Ib+ terrier. They constantly challenge you. And are smart enough to know when you`re too tired to follow through. There is no `done` with training when you have a terrier.

I'm a dollar short but I read this book and her point in including this ttale(tail😂) was to let the reader know she is a bad ass and will deal with things in a direct manner yuck) she also told a story about meeting Kim Jung Un (she never met him) and she looked down on him and speculated she could straighten him.out because "I used to be a children's pastor after all".

In Colorado we’ve walked our dogs at -20 degrees. They do just fine as long as you keep moving. If you stop walking, that’s when the dogs will begin to lift their feet in discomfort.

What about a dog who loves people and wants to say hi, and is frustrated by the leash? The leave it technique you demonstrated works. I want him to be neutral, in the long run. His excitement to meet somebody is the source BC I have tried it with some neighbors I don’t know well, and he was fine once he was near them to say hi, and I handed them treats to give him. I do not believe he is protecting me. He’s about 50 lbs and a 6 1/2 month old male Malinois. Will this technique help with this challenge?

This video would have been helpful three years ago. We’ve had several males that all want to be the boss. Over time I’ve learned to not let the stare down happen. The second it starts I interject and use the same “chill” command lol

There’s one major common trait that the owners have in all these videos. They aren’t the leader. They have submitted to the dog and the dog knows it. It’s that simple

What about a Prey Response? I had an American Eskimo dog bite a girl who went by in a skateboard. We had just returned from the groomer and her collar had not been put back on correctly. As I shortened the leash to hold her ay bay, the collar slipped over her head and she took off after the skateboard girl like a rocket. I kept yelling at the girl to stop, because I believe that would have ended the urge to chase and catch. My boy Eskimo also had a strong prey response when we were all playing in the snow. As I would go down a hill on one of those discs, my boy would run alongside and was attacking my snow boots. We ultimately tied him up to a tree until we were done tobogganing.

Joel-can a vet perform blood work to check for the mental illness?

Hey, i have a Sprollie pup, i literally cannot get her to go out on a leash... She outright refuses to walk on a leash, however, she will walk on it if i take her out the back yard... I have no idea why this is. Even when shes in the backyard on a leash, she doesnt let me walk her, she tries to walk off by herself (basically walking me). Need help to kick this habbit of hers, not sure how to tackle this.

My English bully broke my hand last week cornered me and the wife and then attacked the other dogs . I don't want to put him down but idk what else to do keeps getting worse..

How should I continue to train them? Should I separate them??

I happen to have Wolf hybrids, 4 adults and three 6 month old puppies,,I use the adults to help train the puppies, but they hate a leash,, always fights the leash tell they slip out of the collar..They are not dogs, with a dog mentally, they are immensely intelligent and at 6 months old they are around 80lbs..the female is dominant over her two brothers and is constantly trying to fight them ...they are in an open yard together together

This is an excellent instruction video. But what if the owners of the misbehaving jumping dog are good friends and they simply won't take your suggestion that they train the dog not to constantly jump on people. I even sent them a link to your video and got no reply.I have to avoid going to their house since they got a new goldendoodle breed. It's one year old and the dog is over the top in energy and constantly jumps on me and commands attention from everyone. The owners think it's cute but it's fatiguing and upsetting to guests and they are allowing the dog to control the entire household.
